Austin Vanderford could have himself a memorable 2022 if all goes according to plan.
The undefeated Bellator middleweight is expected to challenge Gegard Mousasi for the promotion’s 185-pound title “in January or February,” Vanderford revealed to MMA Fighting this past month during a visit to American Top Team. “The Gentleman” earned the No. 1 contender spot with a unanimous decision win over Fabian Edwards at Bellator 259 in May.
Not only is Vanderford hoping to knock off a legend to become a world champion for the first time, he also hopes 2022 will be the year he gets to share a fight card with his wife Paige VanZant.
In an exclusive interview with MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck, Vanderford discussed his recovery from an arm injury, his thoughts on Gegard Mousasi’s recent win over John Salter and why he was happy with the result, where his wife goes from her recent BKFC loss to Rachael Ostovich, believing a return to MMA for VanZant is a strong possibility, and more.
